Soul Sucking
“Wait for the master, wait for him in the shadows by the light of the moon…”
Inside the heart of the forest, I stand with my palms open gazing out into the moonlight just as I was told. I stand erect watching, waiting for him. The darkness creeps deeper into my mind and heart as I wait for the master.
Rustling of leaves and branches, I hear heading towards me moving at an alarming pace. Then the footsteps stop suddenly in the deep woods right in front of me; a blanket of darkness covers his figure. I smell his dirty breath now heaving and grunting in a wicked satisfaction.
“Do you know what you ask?” he whispers hauntingly.
“I do.”
Deep bellowing laughter vibrates beneath me as I shiver. The cold night rages on in a restless silence.
“Good, then you must do this thing for me.”
“What is it? Anything.”
“Anything? I like the sound of that!” The master of vampires reveals himself. Bug-like eyes with a crimson glare, stare into my soul. His dark jet-black hair is combed with cobwebs. Spiders crawl around his shriveled face. His pale skin shines in the deadening glow of the full moon. Fangs hang slightly from his wide wry grin as he is covered in black robes. He floats towards me.
“After we are done, I shall tell you what you must do, but first, tell me,” he says smiling as I wait with anticipation. “Why do you want this? Are you one of those filthy priests? The violent menacing hunters from of old who come to torture us poor souls addicted to human flesh?”
“Oh, no, no, master. I have come freely searching for the truth.” My hand is outstretched wanting to touch him but he stands back disgusted.
“The truth? The truth of what? Man searches for the truth but rarely finds it. What do you seek?”
“The truth of… power. Fame, prestige. That is what I desire. Immortality even.” I say wanting to know his secret.
Redness amplifies in his wretched eyes. “Yes… yes, that is good. Just what my master desires.”
“And who is your master,” I ask not knowing who this great one is.
The hideous vampire laughs maniacally with delight. “You’ll know in time. You seem like no spy, no hideous creature of light. It is truly awful out in this desolate world not knowing who to trust, goodness is more widespread than you think. Grace flows like water out from the churches and neighborhoods where humanity prays causing us to be hindered. That is why we must meet at this ungodly hour, in this place, lonely, isolated from the ones who desire the redemption of the world. Terrible, just dreadful. Like my nature.” He smiles.
“So, you are the first of your kind?” I ask.
“Yes, I am no man,” the vampire says deeply toned. “But an evil wicked creature wrought in the fires of the underneath scourged by a taste of blood. Human flesh is my only want. Like water for humanity, is my thirst for it! But others seek my own sinful ways. For power, for honor, for control, we reject everything that is perfect and pleasing.
“When you go deeper into my dark and treacherous paths, whatever is false, whatever is cowardly, whatever is wrong, whatever is dirty, whatever is ugly, whatever is terrible, if anything is poor or deplorable, think about such things.”
“Ah, your followers told me of your terribleness,” I say bowing with fear. “But I never did hear your own words come from your lips before. Now I realize that you are indeed the filth of the world. I need no more convincing.”
He laughs knowing my destination. “Did you bring tribute like you were told?”
“Yes, your people told me what to bring.” I bring a white cloth out of my back pocket. “A severed finger, master.”
“What else,” he asks impatiently. “Quickly, light moves faster than you think!”
I unwrap the little cloth and reveal the two newt eyes. Small but exquisite to him.
“Yes, that’s my favorite. Delectable…” He seizes the bundle like lightning and eats it whole. “You do well, young apprentice. But we shall see if you can accomplish this task satisfactorily.”
“What do you wish, my liege.” I bow on one knee, a hand to my breast.
“Go and bring me a goat’s head. Cut off from its body.”
“I shall do it but how must I do such a messy thing? I’m just a man. I have no weapons, no powers.”
His serpent eyes pierce mine, and his wicked smile full of hate and blasphemy urges me to tremble. “I shall give you what my master gave me.”
Then he grabs me by the shoulders and digs his white teeth into my neck sucking blood out but only enough to satisfy him and not kill me completely.
The blood leaving my body terrifies me as he pulls away quickly and a sharp pain remains in my neck. I fall to my knees as I scream in fury. My body shakes uncontrollably and it throbs where the bite mark is left, red and infected.
I fall on the ground face first and see his feet as he gently crouches down. “Lower yourself, I say, and do my bidding.”
“You, you-”
“What?” Then he smiles disdainfully. “You thought I would give you immortality and there wouldn’t be any consequences?” Mocking me with his laughter.
Unwillingly, controlled like a puppet I transform into a black bat. My body twists and contorts to his liking. I scream in terror as I am possessed by a dark evil.
Flying fast in the night and only wanting to taste human flesh, my mouth foams.
I realize I am tricked by this madman, by this monster of decay. But I decided my lot and I will now live with my decision.
Without stopping, I am compelled to fly until I make it to my destination. Where is my destination? Does it matter? I wander aimlessly, stopping for no one but only to do my master’s cruel will.
Nothing will quench my thirst ever again except the taste of human blood.
